Split & Tip — the bill splitter.
If you are reporting something wrong with a total, please include the amounts you typed, the number of people and the tip percentage. That is enough to reproduce the arithmetic exactly. Please do not send a photo of a receipt with a card number or a signature on it — a description of the lines is enough.
The tip looks lower than I expected
The tip is worked out on the food, not on the tax. If you typed a total that already had tax inside it, the app takes the tax back out before working out the tip, because tipping the tax overpays by the local tax rate. The tax panel can switch this if you would rather tip on the post-tax total.
A service charge or auto-gratuity is not being tipped on
That is deliberate. A mandatory gratuity already is the tip, and a service charge is usually the restaurant's money rather than the server's, so neither is added to the amount the percentage applies to. Each charge has its own switch if your venue works differently.
The shares do not look even
They always add up to the total exactly. When a bill does not divide evenly the spare pennies have to land somewhere, so they rotate between people across the food, tax and tip rather than all landing on the same person.
The scanner misread my receipt
Receipt scanning happens entirely on your phone, and thermal paper is hard. The app checks what it read against the totals printed on the receipt and tells you when they do not add up, rather than showing a confident wrong number. Every line stays editable. If a receipt reads badly and you are willing to describe it, that is genuinely useful — it is how the parser gets better.
I shared a bill and want to know what the link contains
The whole bill travels inside the part of the link after the #, which browsers
never send to a server. Nothing about your bill is stored anywhere. See the
privacy policy.
Receipt photos disappeared from old bills
Photos attached to bills older than about eighteen months are released to reclaim space on your phone. The bill itself — every amount, item and split — is kept.
The app will not install, or stopped updating
Version 2.0 and later need iOS 26. On an older iPhone the App Store keeps the last version that runs there, which still works but no longer receives updates.
Privacy
There is no account, no analytics, no ads and no server that holds a bill. The full policy is at splitandtip.web.app/privacy.
